Life in the Estuary

A panoramic view of the Lower Umpqua region greets us. It is a large estuary...a place where fresh water and salt water mix, a place where life begins. Visible in the landscape are two Rumpies holding a large children's book. The book tells of the role the estuary plays in the life cycles of salmon and sturgeon, it identifies wading and fishing birds, and small mammals who are frequent visitors.

Gone to the Birds - Captured Lakes of Tidewater Country

ll stands of Douglas fir, cedar, and spruce trees create a cathedral along the trail. We open the drawer pulls located on the trees and discover all sorts of information. Continuing up the trail, we arrive at a panoramic view of the Umpqua River Valley. Songbirds have gathered in the trees, while off in the distance and down in the valley, predator birds soar. The book identifies the birds and has a game called Name That Tune. Visitors can push buttons and try to match birds with their songs and calls.
